WordPress has long since replaced Drupal as my favourite CMS but I am also getting rather fond of the WordPress.com community itself. The latest neat thing to come out of it is The Daily Post, a New Year’s resolution of sorts that asks bloggers to start updating daily, or, at the very least, weekly.

Past the break you’ll find more of my thoughts on the initiative, but the bottom line is, I’ll give you at least 1 tweet per day, 1 post per week and 1 video per month for the whole of 2011.

So, yeah, the big challenge here is the post-a-day thing and I realize I’m coping-out big time by not going for that. I could probably do it without cheating too much if I delved into Facebook games, or started looking at Mega Drive classics, and I am certain it would benefit my writing: As it stands, even after so many years, I still need a minimum of two days to complete even a rather simple piece such as my end-of-year thoughts.

However, I do feel that my reviews are not just a guide for whether a game or a movie deserves your time, but also a tiny bit entertaining in themselves, and something you can revisit even after the reviewed item in question has stopped being topical. So, even if I could somehow churn them out daily while still maintaining their style and quality, which is doubtful since it took me more than eight years to pass the three hundred milestone, they’d inevitably lose a lot of their longevity.

I mean, if this was 2013 and you stumbled upon this site while looking for a new Mayan calendar to hang on your wall, you couldn’t possibly be expected to read all 365 reviews I had done in 2011. You’d either suffer Archive Panic and leave in a huff, or simply check out the ones covering the games most familiar to you. Which would make the other posts feel sad.

Anyway, the point is that I have great respect for anyone that will try the post-a-day challenge but I just don’t feel it will work with JRT. So, this is the pledge I’ll actually be taking:

One tweet per day – This looks like a cakewalk as it pretty much is “One interesting sentence per day”.

One post per week – This should also be relatively easy, if we count The Plan and other features besides the reviews. I’ll try to ramp up the challenge and get reviews up weekly, even if it means going into my backlog; we’ll see how it works out.

One video review per month – This is going to be tricky, but I’ll do my best and I have a good feeling.

Pretty simple, right? Feel free to join in yourselves and best of luck to the other participants, I’d best get back to work, it’s going to be an eventful year!

We wish you the best not only for this holiday season, but for every season of every year ever, and you also have our utmost thanks for tuning in!

You’re all awesome and I’m sure you are taking advantage of the Christmas Spirit™ Intoxication to help make the world a better place. You don’t have to raise millions for charity, every little thing counts: from cheering up a co-worker that seems down on his luck, to providing a third-world child with a lifetime of vaccinations, it all holds the same moral gravitas so long as you’re putting your heart into it.

It seems there will be a relatively strong tally of posts in December, let’s see if we can continue this form in 2011! We’ll keep you… posted?

Looking up memes.

This is what happens!

[Strutting Leo] + [Punch-Out!! Video Review], probably my favourite of the bunch.

[Strutting Leo] + [MGS4 Video Review], probably the weakest one, but I had to do something with the iconic JRT shot.

And that’s all for now! Feel free to mash-up JRT highlights with various memes yourself and, have no fear, we’ll come to our senses and have an actual review up shortly.

Sorry about the communication breakdown, I was sidelined with a tricky shoulder injury these past months. Fret not, it wasn’t anything painful or extravagant, but it sure was annoying. I still don’t have full range of motion and my left arm will look kinda funny for a bit longer, but I finally feel comfortable enough to type and even appear in front of the camera; after all, looking funny never stopped me before.

So, new content is imminent!

Text review of a May release goes live tomorrow, the day after we have the list of intriguing releases for September and then a video review, of an even older, but more relevant, game.

Then hard at work to finally review something fresh! What exactly? That’s anOther story…

See ya soon!

Don’t worry, the crew here at JRT is still hard at work with the latest episode, coming out next week. Still, we are multi-class nerds, so we also enjoy a fair share of comics… and when Ryan North made Dinosaur Comics‘ entire corpus available and Brad Friedman conjured a magical algorithm that automatically generates scripts, we couldn’t simply stand idly by.

So, after the break, we have assembled three DC strips out of six of these seemingly random scripts. They might appear a bit scatter-brained, but they are actually transcendently sensible, with high-brow subtext. They are, after all, powered by monkeys. Enjoy!

1/Too Friggin’ Hard Comics:

2/Everyone Defaults to Ice-Cream Comics

3/Scientific Breakthrough Comics

The warmest of wishes for a miraculous Christmas for you & yours, from the cast & crew of JRT! Christmas is about having a merry ol’ time with those closest to your heart, and in many households, including my own, this always involves a little bit of gaming. It is also a time to strive for a kinder world, whether it’s by simply sporting a smile even when the traffic couldn’t possibly get any more jammed, or by contributing to charity organizations such as Child’s Play.

The next episode has been stuck in editing limbo for the past couple of weeks, but we’ll get it to air once the festivities are under control. The original plan was for a release on the 24th and then a special JRT on the 31st; since the special episode is a bit like a “Best of 2009 in Gaming” recap, it’d be neat to have it out before the new year… but, at this point, this seems highly unlikely.

Dare I say, it would take a… Christmas Miracle™?

You might know me as a small-time freelance journalist, part-time college student, or big-time slacker. Allow me to explain why I am now getting my mug in front of a camcorder and shredding what little “not-a-nerd” cred I have left.

I’ve been very happy with my reviews over at Ciao!, even though one might find them impossibly overlong. On the other hand, I’ve never been too proud of my reviews that have actually made it in print, even though they are, supposedly, the more professional of the bunch. This is because, in order to make it in print, you need to strip the review to its bare essentials and make your case of whether something is worth buying in just a few sentences. My slight case of OCD really hates that. I suspect the entertainer in me hates it even more, but he only half-jokes about it so I’ll never know for sure. You see, in print you have to be clinical, so “funny” paragraphs are usually the first to get the axe during editing.

But I respect that in today’s generation, few are willing to peruse whole essays in order to make a simple buying decision, especially under the white glow of a monitor. But, apparently, a lot are willing to watch videos, especially silly videos, especially embarrassing videos whose original uploaders are now ashamed of.

Lucky for me, I have no shame.

So here we are, in the pilot season, or rather, season zero of Johnny Reviews Tonight. In the show I’ll review fresh releases, usually video-games but sometimes books and occasionally movies and playthrough games that are a bit older, usually from a couple of years back. Stay tuned for special episodes and surprise guests!

All five parts of my first Playthrough will be up by the end of this month and I’ll have one Review for you a few weeks later. Shooting will continue during the summer, but editing and uploading might prove problematic.

We’ll have an actual schedule by mid-September, when we’ll start proper with Season 1. The plan is two episodes per month.

I await your comments, but, being pragmatic, I’m only expecting the sound of crickets.
